Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has emerged the overall winner of this year’s Entrepreneurship Action and Us, ENACTUS national competition held in Lagos.

The ABU team that participated in the ENACTUS tournament was led by Usman Suleiman Waziri and Paul Onaji, under the supervision of ABU ENACTUS Faculty Adviser, Professor MK Aliyu.

The ABU team won the national tournament on account of its project on an artisanal mining community in Bagega village in Zamfara State, where several children and adults lost their lives due to lead poisoning as a result of the gold mining activities around the area. The team intervened by developing a water filtration mechanism, which provides clean water to the community as well as evolving a Jathropha Integrated Energy Scheme through the planting of Jathropha tree for remediation of the contaminated soil.

ENACTUS is a non-governmental organisation funded by the private sector and philanthropists. There are well over 500 universities and polytechnics across the globe participating in different ENACTUS activities, among which are more than 20 universities and polytechnics that are involved in Nigeria. The body, hitherto known as ‘Students In Free Enterprise’ (SIFE), organises students across different disciplines to be engaged in the development of projects aimed at solving specific socio-economic problems in their respective communities.

Ahmadu Bello University consequently, will in October represent Nigeria at the Entrepreneurship Action and Us (ENACTUS) World Competition at Silicon Valley, San Jose, California, USA with over 36 countries expected to participate at the world tournament.

Since 2004, the ABU team has been participating in the ENACTUS national competition.

In 2007, the team emerged second out of 24 Nigerian universities and since then, it has been harbouring between second and third positions until last year, when it emerged the overall winner (for their project tagged “Baggega Hope Rising”) and represented Nigeria in London for the ENACTUS World Cup.
