Mbong Utibe Abasi Wins ICPC Anti-Corruption Essay Competition [2019]

Mbong Utibe Abasi from Imperial Secondary School, Eket, Akwa Ibom has won an Anti-Corruption Essay Competition organised by Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), in collaboration with Youth Alive Foundation.

Mbong Utibe Abasi emerged winner from 1,539 students who were mobilised in the clubs’ rejuvenation exercise out of which 392 drawn from Anti-Corruption Clubs in 126 Schools from Akwa Ibom, Kano, Lagos, River States, as well as Federal Capital Territory participated in the Essay Competition.

The Anti-Corruption Essay Competition falls under one of the three (3) projects of the Education Department of ICPC being sponsored by the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom through Youth Alive Foundation, which is registered under the National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC).

The projects include: National Campaign Against Vote Buying, Rejuvenation and Resuscitation of School Anti-Corruption Clubs and Teacher Training on the National Values Curriculum.

In her opening remarks, Mrs. Rasheedat Okoduwa, who represented the Acting Chairman of Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, Mr. M.A. Baba says the competition is one of the major functions of the commission in preventing corruption by educating the public in the fight against corruption.

In her words:

“Competitions ranging from essay writings to debates have been organised by the commission since 2007 among the student members of ICPC Anti-Corruption Clubs nationwide, with the aim and objectives of actively engaging students in the fight against corruption.

This is part of the major functions of the commission in preventing corruption by educating and fostering the support and cooperation of the public in the fight against corruption, as contained in section 6 (e and f) of the Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences 2000.”
