Team Brainiacs Wins 2021 Mindgames Incorporated Scrabble Premier League (MGI)

Team Brainiacs has won the 2021 Mindgames Incorporated Scrabble Premier League (MGI).

Out of 12 teams that participated in the Division A category of the MGI Scrabble League held across various centres in Nigeria, Team Brainiacs won 41 games to accumulate the highest point in the championship.

The highly competitive MGI League, had over 200 scrabble players from across the country in the final of the league.

Speaking at the end of the league, Team Brainiac’s captain, who is also Nigeria’s number one and world number three scrabble player, Eta Karo, said hardwork and determination were the secret of his team’s victory.

In his words:

“When my team came second at the first edition of the MGI Scrabble League, we went back to recruit more quality players to handle the weak links. That was how we were able to overcome the tough competition from the top stars that took part in the championship.

I thank MGI for giving Nigeria’s scrabble players the platform to exhibit their skills in a competitive environment.”

Convener of MGI Scrabble League, Lukman Owolabi, said the MGI Scrabble League, which is aimed at discovering more talents in the board game and also keep Nigerian players in a competitive mood through out the year, has so far brought out the best in the players.

According to Lukman Owolabi:

“Scrabble players in Nigeria are among the people that made the event more competitive and encouraged MGI management to put this league together after COVID-19 pandemic scuttled the second edition.

I also thank our sponsors, Tranos Nigeria Ltd and Loense International for helping to develop scrabble in Nigeria,” he said, adding, “Nigeria is currently the number one scrabble nation in the world and it will be disappointing if the country’s ranking in the game goes down if we don’t do anything to keep the players busy and also discover more talents as it is done in football.

We need more corporate bodies, well meaning Nigerians and government at different levels to help sponsor the league to meet global standard.

Twenty-two teams in total, comprising 12 teams in Division 1 and 10 in Division 2, featured in the league.”

Team Brainiacs won a cash prize of 1.5 million as champions, Blazersle came second in division A category, while Hurricanes came third.

In the division B, Merry -ers Scrabble Club was crowned champions, Indomitables emerged second, while Aries came third.

Godwin Victor from Brainiacs Scrabble club won the Most Valuable player (MVP) award.
