Winners Of 2018 PwC Media Excellence Awards

Winners have emerged at the 2018 PwC Media Excellence Awards.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Media Excellence Awards celebrates and rewards excellence in business reporting in Nigeria. The competition is open to professional journalists on a full time employment or freelancers, working in Nigeria, who have produced a story that falls within the categories covered by the award and that is available on a platform whose primary audience is Nigeria.

The journalists selected in each category by the panel of judges are named the Journalist of the year in that category and receive a cash prize of 500,000 Naira.

Winners Of 2018 PwC Media Excellence Awards

A journalist with Premium Times, Kemi Busari, won the Business and Economy category with his story titled: “INVESTIGATION: corruption, extortion reign at Nigeria Immigration passport offices was published in August 2017”which unravelled corruption in the Nigeria immigration passport offices.

Mr. Kemi Busari edged Chinwe Agbeze of Business Day who emerged runner-up in the category. Busari is a top-class graduate of political science from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

Nwojoki Chimaroke, a journalist with the Nigerian Tribune emerged winner in Tax Reporting category with his story titled: “Tax ‘Armageddon’ beckons as VAIDS period endsation: Endless games…endless controversies”, which warned individuals and corporate organisations against been indifferent to Federal Government’s tax amnesty.

Mr. Nwokoji edged Oluseyi Awojulugbe of The Cable who emerged runner-up in the category.

Mr. Nwokoji is a graduate of Economics from Imo State University and a holder of Master of Research and Public Policy from the University of Lagos, Akoka Yaba.

Stanley Opara of Punch won the Capital Markets reporting with his story titled: “Green bonds as a lifeline for Nigeria’s degraded environment.”

Isaac Anyaogu won the SME’s category with his story titled: “A harvest of Sunshine.”

The winners of the 2018 Pwc Media Excellence Awards were appraised based on the following criteria:

  • Display well organised research and insight
  • Demonstrate journalistic integrity
  • Show originality and resourcefulness in crafting their story
  • Are very relevant to the Nigerian situation
  • Follow the provisions of the entry guidelines

Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, head of tax and regulatory services, Price Water Coppers (PWC) Nigeria said there were 15 entries in Tax, 16 for Capital Market, 26 for SMEs and 69 for Business and Economy reporting. In all, the 2018 PWC Media Excellence Awards received a total of 126 valid entries compared to 83 in 2017.
