A team of students from Lagos State University (LASU) have emerged winners of the 2025 Lead City Voices Intervarsity Debate Competition.
The team, comprising three students — Abdulquadri Ajeniyi, Sunday Saheed, and Adedeji Aderounmu — emerged victorious at the grand finale, which was held at Adeline Hall, Lead City University, Ibadan.
The team of speakers from Lead City University, however, secured second place, while the team of students from Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH) clinched third place.
Before the final stage, twelve (12) universities had participated in the public speaking competition, of which five qualified for the semi-final, while three were eventually selected to compete in the final round.
The three-man panel of judges assessed the contestants based on content, logic and persuasiveness, presentation, time management, and attire.
The winners received a sum of ₦500,000.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of Lead City University, Professor Kabiru Adeyemo, stated that the event affirmed the university’s commitment to fostering public speaking skills among students of tertiary institutions.
He added that the event also attests to the university’s dedication to innovation and societal impact.
While he commended the participating institutions, he added that the 2025 Lead City Voices Intervarsity Debate Competition is not just about winning but also about creating friendships among students of the institutions and promoting academic excellence.
“Today’s competition affirmed Lead City University commitment to fostering public speaking skills among students of tertiary institutions, this event also attest to our University dedication to innovation and societal impact.
I however commend the participating institutions as this competition is not just about contest but an avenue to create friendship and promote academic excellence.”
Also speaking, the President of Lead City Voices, Iretunde Adewusi, explained that the event is an annual one meant to improve the intellectual discourse of students, adding that it is also designed to sharpen the social skills, public speaking, and intellectual abilities of the participants.
