The 2026 PositiveNaija Monthly Chess and Freestyle Competition is aimed at showcasing chess talent, held in Karu Site, Abuja.

The goal is to advance the game of chess as a tool of self discovery and mastery noting the powerful elements of courage, responsibility, sacrifice, creativity, critical -thinking, strategy, decision-making skills, patience, focus, balance, etc.

Chess is also taught for free for all at the PositiveNaija Art Gallery and Gift Shop during open hours on Saturdays.

Details of the 2026 PositiveNaija Monthly Chess And Freestyle Competition

  • Participation: Free
  • Age: No restriction
  • Touch and play: Yes
  • Player colour: Coin toss
  • Resignation: Loss by resignation is allowed
  • Gender: Male and female can play each other
  • Game time: 15 minutes per person (no increment)
  • Deadline of registration: Before the start of the competition
  • Timeout: A participant automatically loses a game when out of time
  • Prize: Fair play award and best creative play award are also available
  • Prize: 1,000 Naira per win and certificate to the person with the most wins
  • Piece movement: Once your fingers are off a moved piece, the move is final
  • Fair play: Disqualification for any mocking or taunting of opponents or players
  • Loss: A player who loses cannot continue to play in the competition for that day
  • Date and schedule: First Saturday of every month (9am – 6pm) – Starting Saturday is for normal chess, the following month for freestyle, the following for normal, and it continues.
  • Illegal moves: 2 illegal moves results to automatic loss by a player (2 minutes is added for opponent after the first illegal move). An illegal move is after it is played and clock pressed. Anyone can bring to the attention of the arbiter, when an illegal move occurs during the game.
  • Playing hands: The same hand used to move the pieces should be same to press the clock
  • Draw outcome: A game can be regarded as a draw via 3-move repetition, stalemate or by insufficient material. Verbal offers are not allowed. If a game is drawn, the players would play again but a coin toss would be done and whoever is black needs a win or a draw to progress
  • Recording: All games are recorded and uploaded on our YouTube channel “PositiveNaija”
