Stop subsidising pilgrimages with public funds By Punch Editorial Board on January 26, 2026 – Recommended Nigerian Newspaper Report 20

MOST Nigerian leaders pretend to love God. They sponsor religious pilgrimages not in the service of God, but in the service of man, mostly to gain political capital and win support in elections.

The Federal Government has allocated 11.5 billion for religious pilgrimages in the 2026 budget. The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria receives 5.99 billion, while the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission gets 5.57 billion. This represents a waste of scarce public funds.

2026 LSU Bayou Benga: Joshua Caleb Wins Men’s 60 Meters Race Event

Joshua Caleb clocked a time of 6.66 seconds to win the men’s 60 meters race event final at the 2026 LSU Bayou Bengal in Baton Rouge.

He led a 1-2 finish for LSU as his teammate Jaden Reid finished second in 6.72 seconds. Madonna Favour finished third in a Personal Best (PB) of 6.75 seconds.

Blessing Ogundiran has won the women’s 60 meters race event final at the 2026 Alachua County Invitational, clocking a time of 7.22 seconds.

The Warner University student is now the second fastest woman in NAIA history.

She had initially run 7.23 seconds in qualifying. Olga Gomez was a far second in 7.53 seconds.
