Nigerian Public Alert 51: NAFDAC Notifies on Nestle UK RecallsSpecific Batches Of Its SMAInfant Formula and Follow-On FormulaOver Toxin Contamination Concerns

Nigerian Public Alert 51: The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is notifying the general public, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and all relevant stakeholders of a voluntary global recall by Nestlé UK of specific batches of its SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula due to the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin, in the batches concerned.

Cereulide is an extremely heat-resistant toxin produced by certain strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus. The toxin is known to cause foodborne illness, leading to nausea and severe vomiting.

The voluntary global recall does not affect the SMA range of Nestlé Infant Formulae produced for Nigeria.

It is important to note the following NAFDAC Registration Numbers for Nestlé SMA infant formula and follow-on formula, duly registered in Nigeria. Any SMA infant formula without the underlisted NAFDAC registration numbers is considered illegal within the Nigerian market.

Product Name NAFDAC Registration Number
SMA Gold 1 B1-2783
SMA Gold 2 B1-2780
SMA Gold 3 B1-2781

The specific batches affected by the voluntary global recall have been published on the Nestlé UK website at https://www.nestle.co.uk/en-gb/media/sma-infant-formula-follow-on-formula-recall

NAFDAC urges the public to remain vigilant and only purchase infant formula products from reliable and authorized sources.

All NAFDAC Zonal Directors and State Coordinators have been activated to carry out surveillance to identify any of the recalled or illegally sold Nestlé SMA infant formula products in the Nigerian market.

Consumers are encouraged to report the presence of unregistered infant formula to the nearest NAFDAC office. Report adverse events or side effects related to the use of the implicated product to the nearest NAFDAC office, or through the use of the E-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website www.nafdac.gov.ng, or via the Med-safety application available for download on Android and IOS stores, or via e-mail on pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng
