Team Nigeria successfully defended the region 2 title, finishing top of the table at the two-day 2025 CAA Region 2 Championship at the University of Ghana sports complex.
Prestina Ochonogor led Nigeria’s charge in the field events on the last day of the 2025 CAA Region 2 competition, winning the women’s long jump with a season’s best leap of 6.76 meters. It is the farthest mark she has jumped this year, improving on the 6.71 meters she jumped at the African under-20 Championship in Abeokuta. Ochonogor has a personal best of 6.79 meters.
In the men’s Javelin, Samuel Adams Kure landed the gold medal in this event, throwing his best mark of 73.54 meters for the win; and he was only athlete over 70 meters. Burkina Faso’s Daouda Coulibaly finished second with a mark of 65.49 meters, while Ghana’s Gabriel Teye threw 64.08 meters to win bronze.
Nigeria further pulled away from every other country, dominating the mixed 4×400 meters relay – team Nigeria ran a season’s best of 3:15.63, almost 10 seconds faster than Ghana who finished second with 3:25.30. Burkina Faso completed the podium placement in this event, finishing third in 3:31.09.
Gafari Badmus has won gold in the men’s 400 meters with a personal best of 45.53 seconds. In second place, Ezekiel Eno Asuquo crowned his senior debut for Nigeria with another podium placement, finishing second in 46.38 seconds to secure the silver medal, making it a Nigerian 1-2 finish in this event. Ghana’s Mordecai Acheampong got the bronze medal, finishing third in 46.63 seconds.
Olaolu Jason Olatunde won his first senior 100 meters gold medal for Nigeria in a time of 10.60 seconds. Ghana’s Kevin Arthur was a close second in 10.63 seconds, with Cote d’ivoire’s Abdul Razak Kone third in 10.71 seconds. This season, Olatunde ran a personal best of 10.13 seconds at the Nigerian trials.
Anita Itohan Enaruna claimed her first individual senior medal for Nigeria, winning the gold medal in the women’s 200 meters final at the 2025 CAA Region 2 Championships. Enaruna smashed her 200 meters personal best, going under 24 seconds for the first time in her career to win gold, running a new personal best of 23.91 seconds. She beat her compatriot, Maria Thompson who finished second in 24.01 seconds to get the silver medal, and Gambia’s Isatou Sey settling for bronze in 24.25 seconds. This season, Enaruna excelled at the African Junior Championships in Abeokuta, winning the silver medal in the women’s 400 meters, and three gold medals in the relays.
Chidera Ezeakor won the men’s 200 meters race event clocking a lifetime’s best of 20.77 seconds. In fact, it was his second personal best in a day, running 21.05 seconds earlier in the heats. Ghana’s duo of Edwin Gadayi and Marizuk Shaibu finished second and third in the race, crossing the line in 21.14 seconds and 21.21 seconds respectively. Nigeria’s Abdulgafar Audu came in fourth with a time of 21.56 seconds.
