2025 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) VIA Programme For Safe Mobility In Nigeria: Government Secondary School, Orozo Emerge Overall Winner

Government Secondary School, Orozo, has emerged the overall winner of the 2025 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) edition of the VIA Programme for Safe Mobility in Nigeria.

The state-level competition featured 10 public secondary schools showcasing their road safety advocacy projects through creative expressions such as posters, drama, poetry, and songs — all developed through classroom learning and community-based fieldwork.

The VIA Programme, a youth-focused road safety education initiative, is implemented in Nigeria by GreenLight Initiative with support from the TotalEnergies Foundation. Originally launched globally in 2018 by the TotalEnergies Foundation and Michelin Corporate Foundation, the programme operates in over 12 countries, engaging youth aged 10 to 25 to promote safer mobility and reduce travel-related risks.

At the FCT competition, GSS Orozo took first place, followed by Government Secondary School, Asokoro in second place, and Government Secondary School, Jiwa in third.

Participants impressed both the audience and a panel of expert judges with compelling storytelling and practical solutions to everyday road safety challenges faced by students. Their presentations highlighted innovative strategies developed from real-life risk mapping activities around their schools.

Patience Agabi, Communications Lead for GreenLight Initiative, noted that the programme aims to build youth leadership on road safety through partnerships with the Federal Road Safety Corps, state education ministries, and other relevant agencies. She said the goal is to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities, especially among school children.

Agabi added that the VIA Programme currently runs in Lagos, Rivers, and the FCT, directly engaging 600 students across 30 government schools. These participants, known as “VIA Ambassadors,” are trained to lead peer education, identify hazards, and advocate for positive change in their communities.

The FCT event marked the final round of state-level competitions. Winners from Lagos, Rivers, and the FCT will advance to the National Finals, where one school will be selected to represent Nigeria at the International VIA Finals in France later this year.

Beyond the 2025 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) edition of the VIA Programme for Safe Mobility in Nigeria competition, students gained essential leadership, teamwork, and public speaking skills — positioning them as future advocates for road safety across Nigeria.
