Austin Amunega, Founder of Relief Cleaning Initiatives: How I Rebuilt My Life as a Returnee Migrant Through Recycling
On 19 November 2025, I returned to Nigeria after a difficult migration journey with little certainty about what the future would hold. Like many returnee migrants, I faced financial hardship, emotional setbacks, and the daunting task of rebuilding my life from scratch.

Rather than allowing those challenges to define my future, I made a different choice. I decided to build something that would create lasting value for both people and the environment. That decision led to the establishment of Relief Cleaning Initiatives, a Nigerian social enterprise dedicated to recycling, environmental sustainability, green logistics, cleaning services, and circular economy solutions.
My mission is to transform waste into opportunity — creating cleaner communities, restoring dignity, and generating sustainable livelihoods.
Every plastic bottle collected is more than recyclable material. It represents a cleaner environment, reduced pollution, and another step toward creating employment opportunities for returnee migrants, young people, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable members of society. It is proof that even what many people throw away can become a source of hope and economic empowerment.
The journey has not been easy. There have been days of financial struggle, moments when promising partnerships failed to materialize, and times when I invested scarce resources into opportunities that never came through. Yet every setback has strengthened my resolve.
I have learned that resilience is not the absence of failure. It is the courage to keep moving forward despite disappointment, uncertainty, and obstacles. Every challenge has become a lesson, every delay has strengthened my character, and every small victory has reminded me that meaningful change takes persistence.
Today, I am building partnerships with businesses, community organizations, government agencies, and environmental stakeholders who believe that sustainability and economic opportunity can go hand in hand. Beyond my work in recycling and environmental services, I also speak on resilience, migration, entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, and how ordinary people can create practical solutions that transform their communities.
Nigeria’s environmental challenges cannot be solved by one sector alone. They require collaboration between government, businesses, civil society organizations, development partners, and local communities. By working together, we can build cleaner cities, reduce waste, protect our environment, strengthen the circular economy, and create dignified employment for thousands of Nigerians.
I believe waste is one of Nigeria’s greatest untapped opportunities. When managed responsibly, it can create jobs, protect the environment, stimulate local enterprise, and restore hope for people seeking a fresh start.
My vision is to grow Relief Cleaning Initiatives into one of Nigeria’s leading green enterprises—demonstrating that social impact and business success can reinforce one another. I want our work to inspire a future where environmental responsibility, innovation, and inclusive economic growth become part of everyday life.
Above all, I hope my story reminds anyone facing difficult circumstances that a setback does not have to be the end of the journey. With resilience, purpose, integrity, and a willingness to serve others, it is possible to rebuild, create lasting value, and inspire positive change.
