Nine Nigerians Win 2021 Facebook Community Accelerator Programme

Facebook has announced winners of the 2021 Facebook Community Accelerator Programme, highlighting the 13 Facebook community leaders from Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya who will receive training, mentorship and up to $50,000 in funds to invest in an initiative that extends their community’s positive impact.

The 13 winners emerged out of over 13,000 applicants who entered the 2021 Facebook Community Accelerator Programme, according to a statement distributed by APO Group on behalf of Facebook.

The Community Accelerator is part of Facebook’s Community Leadership Programme, a global initiative that invests in people building communities. Leaders will learn how to harness the power of their community to turn impactful ideas into action.

This year’s cohort features a diverse spectrum of communities engaged in interesting social impact activities ranging from combating child sexual abuse to helping moms and sharing stories of ordinary and extraordinary Nigerians from around the world.

Adeola Oyinlade has been selected as the recipient of the 2021 ABA International Human Rights Award.

Adeola Oyinlade is a Nigerian lawyer, human rights advocate and international law expert also known for providing pro bono legal services to those in need in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa.

Dr. Abiodun Adereni Wins 2021 Waislitz Global Citizen COVID-19 Response Award

Dr. Abiodun Adereni, the founder and CEO of HelpMum has emerged winner of the 2021 Waislitz Global Citizen COVID-19 Response Award.

As a result of his work during the pandemic, Dr. Adereni was awarded the COVID-19 Response Award, which honors a person who implemented a specific program to address the impacts of COVID-19 in their community. With the $50,000 cash prize, he plans to expand HelpMum’s services to support more pregnant women in rural areas.

Olasubomi Iginla Aina Elected As Director Of The Global NGO Executive Committee (GNEC)

Olasubomi Iginla Aina has been elected as a Director of the Global Non-Government Organisation Executive Committee (GNEC).

Alongside the other 17 individuals which form the GNEC, they act as the liaison between the NGO community and the United Nations (UN) through the Department of Global Communication of the UN.

Following this appointment, Olasubomi Iginla Aina becomes the only Nigerian on the GNEC, which comprises representatives elected by civil society organizations that are officially associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications (UNDGC).

She brings in professional experience, ground-breaking ideas and creativity which will be of great benefit to Global NGOs, relevant stakeholders & the Executive Committee.

Eight Nigerians have emerged recipients of the 2021 The Diana Award, which celebrates outstanding young people selflessly creating and sustaining positive social change.

The Diana Award was established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales for young persons aged 9-25 years for their social action or humanitarian work through a retrospective nomination process only.

Young people as recipients of the 2020 The Diana Award do not work towards the award, rather they demonstrate their suitability through their actions, without any expectation of reward.

Oguzie Kenneth has been awarded the most inspiring immigrant in Eastern Canada, for his contributions and active support towards immigrants.

Oguzie Kenneth, a Nigerian-Canadian based entrepreneur and Founder, Africa Canada Trade and Investment Venture, received the honour in an award ceremony in Canada.

The regions in Eastern Canada where his contributions were actively recognised included Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island provinces.
