Winners have emerged in the 2021 African Legal Awards organised to recognise outstanding individuals and law firms, in the pan-African legal community.

The 2021 African Legal Awards held on September 3, 2021 witnessed a record-breaking submission from 16 countries.

In selecting the Partner of the year, the judges considered the leadership potential, legal skills, initiative, client relationship skills and contribution of the Partners to the wider community.

Kene Ilochonwu Emerges First Black Bencher Elected To The Law Society Of Alberta

Kene Ilochonwu, a legal counsel with Parkland Corporation has emerged as the first Black bencher elected to the Law Society of Alberta in its 113-year-history.

The law society board is made up of 24 members, known as benchers. Twenty are lawyers, elected by the profession, and four are members of the public, appointed by the minister of justice.

Chief Superintendent Catherine Ugorji Receives Runner-Up Award As 2020 UN Woman Police Officer Of The Year

Chief Superintendent Catherine Ugorji of the Nigerian police and serving with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) has been selected by the UN as one of two runners-up for the prestigious UN Woman Police Officer of the Year award for 2020.

Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, in a statement by Oluseyi Soremekun, the National Information Officer of the UN System in Nigeria, said through both her words and actions, UN Police Officer Catherine Ugorji exemplifies the best of UN policing.

Dorothy Udeme Ufot Wins African Arbitrator (AFAA) Of The Year Award 2020

Mrs. Dorothy Udeme Ufot has won the African Arbitrator (AFAA) of the Year Award at a virtual event hosted on the sidelines of the yearly East African International Arbitration Conference, which took place in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mrs. Dorothy Udeme Ufot, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and chartered arbitrator, defeated her counterparts Professor Mohammed Abdel Wahab from Egypt and Dr. Jamsheed Peeroo from Mauritius.

The Africa Arbitration Awards winners were announced and celebrated in a virtual ceremony that was broadcast live on Zoom, YouTube and on the conference portal.

Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Performs First All-Female Crew Intelligence, Surveillance And Reconnaissance (ISR) Mission

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has conducted its first all-female crew intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) mission on 28 May 2020 using the NAF Beechcraft KingAir ISR aircraft.

The historic mission had Flying Officers Oluwabunmi Ijelu and Genevieve Nwaogwugwu as Captain and Co-Pilot, respectively, with Sergeant Njoku Patience as the Airborne Tactical Observation System (ATOS) mission operator and Lance Corporal Shawulu Godiya as the on-board technician.

Henry Ukomadu, Moshood Lasisi & Gabriel Shogaolu Honoured With Dag Hammarskjöld Medal

The United Nations Organization honours Henry Ukomadu, Moshood Lasisi and Gabriel Shogaolu and eighty (80) other military, police and civilian peacekeepers, who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2019 with the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal.

The fallen heroes were posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal during a virtual award ceremony on the 29th of May 2020 to mark the 2020 International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
