Nigerian Public Alert 85: NAFDAC Notifies on Suspected Counterfeit ORACIRE+ Toothpaste

Nigerian Public Alert 85: The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is informing the public of the circulation of a suspected counterfeit toothpaste product, ORACIRE+ TOOTHPASTE, which is being distributed in Nigeria under the guise of the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste.

This follows a formal complaint and a market intelligence report regarding the widespread distribution of the suspected counterfeit product. Market surveillance conducted at Ojuwoye Market, Mushin, Lagos, revealed that the product closely resembles the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste in packaging design and overall presentation, making it difficult for consumers to distinguish between the two products.

Risk Statement

Counterfeit personal care products may not meet established quality and safety standards and could pose health risks to consumers. The origin, composition, safety, and quality of the suspected counterfeit product have not been verified.

NAFDAC has initiated surveillance activities, and all zonal directors and state coordinators have been instructed to investigate the availability and distribution of the suspected counterfeit product and take appropriate regulatory action.

Consumers, distributors, retailers, and healthcare providers are advised to exercise caution when purchasing ORACARE+ Toothpaste. Purchase toothpaste products only from reputable and authorized outlets.  Carefully examine product packaging and source of supply before purchase.

Consumers and Healthcare providers are advised to report any suspicion of the sale of suspected counterfeit ORACIRE+ Toothpaste to the nearest NAFDAC office, call NAFDAC on 0800-162-3322, or via email: sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng,or via the Med- safety application available for download on Android and IOS stores

Similarly, healthcare providers and consumers are also encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of any NAFDAC-regulated product to the nearest NAFDAC office, or through the use of the E-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website www.nafdac.gov.ng, or via the Med- safety application available for download on Android and IOS stores, or via e-mail on pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng
