Oluwasegun Olakoyenikan Wins 2021 African Fact-Checking Award

Oluwasegun Olakoyenikan emerges the first runner-up in the Fact-Check of the Year by a Working Journalist category at the 2021 African Fact-Checking Award.

The category was won by Jean le Roux from the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Lab in South Africa.

Reagan Kiyimba of Uganda from Makerere University won the Fact-Check of the Year by a Student Journalist category. Fatma Mbacké of Senegal from CESTI Dakar emerged the first runner-up in the Fact-Check of the Year by a Student Journalist category.

The winner of the best fact-check in the category for working journalists is awarded a prize of $3,000 and the runner-up takes $1,500. The winner of the students category takes home $2,000 while the runner-up collects $1,000.

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) Desert Warriors have emerged winners of the 2021 Higher Institutions Football League (HiFL).

At the final played at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, UNIMAID Desert Warriors defeated Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, (AAUA) Luminaries 1-0 to win the competition.

Hameed Olanrewaju and Onyeka Iyoha have emerged winners of the 2021 Next-Gen PR World Cup Africa competition after overcoming a field of seven teams.

Hameed Olanrewaju, Head of Innovation and Insights and Onyeka Iyoha, Head of Research and Insights, at Modion Communication will go on to represent Africa at the International Communications Consultancy Organisation (ICCO) PR World Cup in October 2021.

Isaac Okeke, Ekunke Odey Goodness, Quickpen Deborah & Olanrewaju Obaloluwa Win 2021 African Youth Chess Championship

Isaac Okeke, Ekunke Odey Goodness, Quickpen Deborah and Olanrewaju Obaloluwa have emerged gold medallist winners at the 2021 African Youth Chess Championship.

In all, Nigeria won four gold and one silver with a total of 23 points. Egypt finished top of the table winning four gold, two silver and four bronze medals with a total of 30 points.

The 2021 African Youth Chess Championship took place at the Best Western Plus Accra Beach Hotel, in Accra, Ghana, from 17th to 26th September 2021. The tournament had over 170 participants from 11 countries. Isaac Okeke – 2135 (U-18) from Nigeria was the top seed at the event.

African Chess Confederation (ACC) organized the event in collaboration with Ghana Chess Association who played host to the participants.

Chigozie Obi Wins 2021 Access Bank Art X Prize

Chigozie Obi has emerged winner of the 2021 Access Bank Art X Prize art competition, which was held on the 28th of September 2021.

The winner was awarded a 1,800,000 grant; a three-month residency at Gasworks, London; and a solo booth presentation at ART X Lagos in 2022.

The multi-dimensional visual artist was selected by a jury from five shortlisted finalists, which included: Chukwudi Onwumere, Mobolaji Ogunrosoye, Nyancho NwaNri, and Omoregie Osakpolor.

Themed “Forward Ever”, this year’s Art X Lagos edition speaks to the youth generation’s increased understanding of their role as engaged citizens, navigating their presence and trying to become active instigators in the creation of their futures.
