Winners of the 2025 Lagos State Governor’s Quiz Competition among students have emerged with Iba Housing Estate Senior Secondary School( District 5), winning the first prize of the Senior School Category.
The school defeated Bolade Senior Grammar School(District 6) and Government Senior College (District 4) to second and third position, respectively.
Badagry Junior Grammar School (District 4) won the Junior School Category beating Vetland Junior Grammar School (District 1) and Dolphin Junior High School (District 3) to second and third position respectively, while Abina Omololu Primary School (District 4), Community Primary School (District 1) and St. Mary Convent School (District 3) took the first, second and third positions respectively in the Primary School Category.
The annual competition with this year’s 18th edition was instituted during the administration of Babatunde Fashola as the governor of the state and has since been sustained by the successive administrations.
All public schools from primary to senior secondary across the six educational districts in the state are eligible to participate in the competition runs from preliminary to the finals, where the top three across categories will emerge and be rewarded.
The students were tested in core subjects including English language, Mathematics, Basic Technology and Current Affairs.
Speaking at the finals and award event, the state’s Commissioner for Basic and Senior Secondary School, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, expressed delight over the “confidence, speed and display of brilliance at which the students answered their questions.”
He commended them for their dedication and commitment.
Alli-Balogun noted that the quiz contest has not only contributed significantly to the improved performance of students in public exams such as the senior school and junior school certificate exams but also enhanced their critical thinking, confidence, problem-solving, and communication skills.
The commissioner praised their teachers, saying the high performance of their students and well-behaved manner was a reflection of their commitment and dedication to work.
Alli-Balogun urged them to keep the flag flying even as he advised parents to continue to support their children in their academic journey.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to produce well-rounded learners who will be globally competitive.
Earlier, in her opening remarks, the Director of Co-curricular Services Division under the ministry, Mrs Oluyemisi Adebesin, described the competition as a veritable platform to test the knowledge of students on their studies, among other benefits.
She said she was particularly impressed by their performances across the three categories
Adebesin declared that the ministry would continue to encourage the learners to be equipped with the right knowledge and skills that would make them globally competitive.
The high point of the 2025 Lagos State Governor’s Quiz Competition was the presentation of awards to winning schools and their representatives.
The prizes included trophies, school bags and some educational materials.
