Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has been awarded the 8th African Leadership Magazine African Of The Year 2019 award at a ceremony held in Johannesburg.

Themed ‘Africa for Africans – Exploring the Gains of a Connected Continent’, the event brought together dignitaries including South African Deputy President, David D. Mabuza, South African Ministers Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Lindiwe Zulu, and Dr. Ken Giami, Publisher of African Leadership Magazine.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Appointed AU Special Envoy To Mobilise International Economic Support Against Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)

The Chairperson of the African Union, President of the Republic of South Africa His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Dr. Donald Kaberuka, Mr. Tidjane Thiam and Mr. Trevor Manuel as Special Envoys of the African Union (AU) to mobilise international support for Africa’s efforts to address the economic challenges African countries will face as a result of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The Special Envoys will be tasked with soliciting rapid and concrete support as pledged by the G20, the European Union and other international financial institutions.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Appointed Member Of South Africa’s Presidential Economic Advisory Council

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed a member of the Economic Advisory Council set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa to help give South Africa a coherent economic policy.

The Presidential Economic Advisory Council is to ensure greater coherence and consistency in the implementation of economic policy and ensure that government and society in general is better equipped to respond to changing economic circumstances.

Comprising local and international economic thought leaders, the Council will advise the President and government more broadly, facilitating the development and implementation of economic policies that spur inclusive growth.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a seasoned economist and accepted the appointment for her to serve as a member of the Council.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Named Special Envoy Of WHO Inaugural Access To COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been named a Special Envoy for the newly inaugurated Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

She is to serve alongside British business executive, Andrew Witty, in the same capacity, to mobilise international commitment to the initiative.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Named Member Of International Monetary Fund (IMF) New External Advisory Group

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been named a member of the External Advisory Group constituted by the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva.

The group of prominent individuals from around the world are to serve as the IMF chief’s special advisers that would provide insights to enhance the fund’s ability to serve its membership.

They consist mainly of high-level technocrats and policy experts with private sector experience.

The new external advisory group, inaugurated on the 10th of April 2020 in Washington DC, is to also provide perspectives from around the globe on key developments and policy issues.

Obiageli Solaja Wins Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) 2019 African Women In Badminton Award

Obiageli Solaja has been awarded the 2019 African Women in Badminton Award by the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA).

Obiageli Solaja becomes the second recipient of the award, following that of Gretha Prinsloo of South Africa who received the 2018 award last year during the BCA Annual General Meeting in Nanning China.

The honour will be bestowed at the BCA Annual General Meeting 2020 at a date to be fixed later due to the current COVID-19 global pandemic.
