Bayelsa Queens Wins Nigeria’s First CAF Women Champions League Medal At 2022 CAFWCL

Bayelsa Queens has won Nigeria’s first CAF Women Champions League medal at the 2022 CAFWCL after a third place finish.

Bayelsa Queens of Nigeria defeated their counterparts from Tanzania, Simba Queens, 1-0 in the third-place match at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Morocco on November 12, 2022.

Glory Edet and Etim Edidiong going close to the breakthrough with good chances for the Bayelsa but Simba did hit back with opportunities of their own after calming the early storms from the Nigerians.

Still, there was nothing to separate both sides at the break as the game remained goalless at halftime. The second half was similar to the opening 46 minutes with both sides looking for a decisive breakthrough. It finally arrived 20 minutes from time when Juliet Sunday finished a cross from Mercy Itimi to put Bayelsa ahead.

Simba came closer to an equaliser when a ferocious attempt by Clement was saved by Bayelsa’s Bawou Gabrielle later on.

Bayelsa Queens substitute Chinyere Igbomalu missed a big chance and it was the last real action from the game as Bayelsa held on for the win to make history, becoming the first Nigerian side to pick up a medal in the CAFWCL.

The Prosperity Girls won three out of five game and lost the other two to Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies of South Africa and ASFAR FC of Morocco.
