Paul Onuachu Becomes First Nigerian To Win Belgian Golden Shoe Award [2021]

Paul Onuachu has been named the winner of the 2021 Belgian Golden Shoe award, becoming the first-ever Nigerian and the fourth African to claim the prestigious honour.

The 27-year-old player claimed the award on 12 January 2022 after scoring an incredible 29 league goals over the entire 2020-21 season and adding another 12 in the first half of the current campaign for Genk who occupy the ninth spot in the table, 18 points behind leaders Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Belgian Golden Shoe award is given at the beginning of each year to the best footballer in the country’s First Division A for the past year. The win also saw him become the third Genk player in history to be named Belgium’s best and the first in 20 years. Paul Onuachu gathered 333 votes to beat the Club Brugge duo of Noa Lang (272 votes) and Charles De Ketelaere (271 votes) to second and third, respectively.

Oparaoji Uche & Marylove Edwards Win Inaugural Abuja Tennis Cup

Oparaoji Uche and Marylove Edwards have emerged winners of the maiden edition of Abuja Tennis Cup in the male and female categories respectively.

Top seed Marylove Edwards emerged champion in the female category after defeating her opponent Mohammed Jummai in two straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

In the men’s event that took place at the Tennis Center of the Package B of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, Oparaoji Uche dismantled Atseye Henry 6-2, 6-2, in a match that lasted for over an hour, to be crowned champion.

Eight male and eight female top Nigerian tennis players took part in the 4-day event that was organized by the Tennis Management Company Limited.

Bose Omolayo and Folashade Oluwafemiayo have set new world records in the up to 79kg and 86kg categories winning gold at the 2021 Powerlifting Championship in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championships was a powerlifting competition for athletes with a disability. It was held in Tbilisi, Georgia from 27 November to 5 December, 2021.

The tournament was one of the compulsory tournaments to qualify for the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris, France.

Team Nigeria won a total of six (6) medals: three gold; one silver and two bronze.

Seven Nigerian weightlifters have won nine medals at the 2021 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships, which was held in Uzbekistan.
