26-year-old Nigerian and FC Barcelona player, Asisat Oshoala has emerged the first African woman to win the UEFA Champions League.

Asisat Oshoala was substituted in the 71st minute of the finals with Barcelona defeating Chelsea 4–0 on the 16th of May, 2021.

PositiveNaija Naija Lyrics And Movies Challenge 2021

The PositiveNaija Naija Lyrics and Movies Challenge 2021 is a monthly quiz aimed at appreciating the value of good songs and the movie industry in Nigeria.

The seven-question-challenge, which features estimable Nigerians/individuals, is scheduled for the last Friday of every month at 9:00 pm (beginning from June 2021), focuses on various genres/kinds of songs and movies/film (including comedy).

Participants are presented with five (5) songs in selected portions/parts with each having a maximum of 50 words. The participants are expected to state accordingly, for the presented lyrics, the official song title or the name of the song. Including the name of the artiste(s)/singer(s)/musicians is optional.

Participants are also presented with two (2) images of a Nigerian actor and actress and expected to state accordingly, the names of both persons.

Othuke Umokoro Wins 2021 Brunel International African Poetry Prize

Othuke Umokoro has emerged winner of the 2021 Brunel International African Poetry Prize with his poem titled “A Mountain Cracks Before Translation”.

The £3,000 prize winner, Othuke Umokoro, is a poet and playwright who studied playwriting at the University of Ibadan and teaches literature to high school students.

Eight Nigerians have been selected into the African #YouTubeBlackVoices Creator Class of 2021.

According to Youtube on the inaugural #YouTubeBlackVoices Creator Class:

“We’re excited to spotlight Black creatives and to continue to center both their voices and perspectives. As part of that mission, we developed the #YouTubeBlackVoices grant program  — an initiative dedicated to investing in Black creators and artists, and equipping them with the resources to succeed on our platform. This grant program is part of our larger #YouTubeBlackVoices Fund, a global, multi-year commitment to empower Black creators and artists on our platform, as well as to produce and acquire new YouTube Original programs, focusing on racial justice and Black experiences.

After many months of collaboration, we’re excited to introduce you to our inaugural class of #YouTubeBlackVoices creator grantees from Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, who are part of our 132 creators from across the world who are participating in the Class of 2021.

In the coming months, we will work closely with the Class of 2021. This will include dedicated partner support, seed funding invested into the development of their channels, and participation in an intensive development program that will focus on training in production, community engagement and wellbeing, followed by ongoing workshops and networking programs.”

Ayodele Oluwafemi, Taiwo Adebulu, Vivian Chime And Three Others Emerge Report For The World Inaugural Reporting Corps [2021-2022]

Ayodele Oluwafemi, Taiwo Adebulu, Vivian Chime and three other journalists have emerged Report for the World inaugural reporting corps [2021-2022].

Three corps members will join the staff at TheCable in Nigeria and three will join Scroll.in in India.

Report for the World launched in February and has been working with its newsroom partners, TheCable and Scroll.in, to select these talented local journalists. The application process was highly competitive, with over 335 applicants, but only six spots available. The corps members, who are full-time employees of the newsrooms for up to three years, are:

  • Aarefa Johari, covering work and gender for Scroll.in
  • Ayodele Oluwafemi, covering criminal justice for TheCable
  • Ishan Kukreti, covering land and climate for Scroll.in
  • Johanna Deeksha, covering health and education for Scroll.in
  • Taiwo Adebulu, fact-checking for TheCable
  • Vivian Chime, covering climate change for TheCable
