Access Bank Plc has emerged winner of the 2019 GBA Women’s Market Champion Impact Award for its efforts towards providing opportunities for women.

Organised by the Global Banking Alliance for Women (now Financial Alliance for Women) in Paris, the award contributes to a growing list of recognitions for Access Bank, including the National Women in Finance Magazine’s Outstanding Banking Initiative Awards; the Global Banking Alliance (GBA) Women’s Market Champion Award; CBN Excellence in Women Economic Empowerment Award; National Council for Women Society Nigeria’s Dedication to Women Entrepreneurship Award; CBN Excellence in Women Economic Empowerment Award, among others.

Covenant University Wins The ENACTUS Nigeria National Competition 2019

Covenant University has emerged overall winner of the ENACTUS Nigeria National Competition 2019 themed: “Leapfrogging Human Capital Development”, which held between July 10-11, 2019 at The Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Covenant University ENACTUS team emerged victorious over 18 other teams from various universities across the country. The team had finished in second place for two years in a row both times losing to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU). This time however, they got the better of ABU who finished at second place and in September 2019, will represent Nigeria at the ENACTUS World Cup in San Jose California, USA.

Their project, The Pet City initiative, which focused on turning plastic waste into sustainable building materials that are durable and cost effective, was the project that earned them the victory in this year’s competition. According to their team lead, David Iyiola, the Pet City initiative “will reduce the cost of providing houses by 60% and would increase the annual income and standard of living of 150 women by 25%.”

Their second project: TOLES, is a social enterprise that aims at providing children in impoverished communities with eco-friendly and durable footwear from used and scrap tyres. The team successfully produced and distributed 3,922 footwear, created jobs for 257 persons at the production factory and repurposed over 600 waste tyres. The team expressed gratitude to Guaranty Trust Bank for the 1 million grant that enabled them kick-start the project.

First Bank Pioneers Visa Multi-Currency Card In Nigeria

First Bank of Nigeria Limited has introduced the Visa Multi-Currency Card, an All-in One-Card and first of its kind to be offered by any financial institution in Nigeria. This card can be linked to all of four currencies namely: NAIRA, USD, EURO and GBP accounts.

With the Visa Multi-Currency card, First Bank customers – within and outside Nigeria – can now enjoy the luxury of having their local and foreign denominated accounts in any currency (earlier stated), linked to a single Debit card. The Visa Multi-Currency Card is designed to ease the daily cashless transactional needs of customers regardless of where they are across the world.

Lesley Nneka Arimah Wins 2019 Caine Prize For African Writing

Lesley Nneka Arimah has won the 2019 Caine Prize for African Writing for her short story entitled “Skinned”, published in McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern (Issue 53) 2018.

She has been awarded $12,500 (£10,000) for her winning the 2019 Caine Prize for African Writing.

Dr. Peter Kimani, Chair of Judges announced Lesley as the winner of the £10,000 prize at an award dinner on 8 July, 2019. The ceremony was held for the third time in Senate House, in partnership with SOAS and the Centre for African Studies.

Winners Of Euromoney Africa Awards For Excellence 2019

Winners have emerged at the Euromoney Africa Awards for Excellence 2019 at a ceremony held in London on July 10, 2019, at the London Hilton Hotel, Park Lane.

Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTBank), has been named the Best Bank in Africa 2019 by Euromoney.

GTBank was also named the Best Bank in Nigeria for a record ninth time, reflecting the Bank’s position as one of the best managed financial institutions in the country, with strong and focused leadership that keep the business in a constant state of re-invention and innovation.

Team Nigeria Wins Teamwork Award At 2019 FIRST LEGO League Junior (FLL Jr.) International Challenge In California

Team Nigeria comprising a team of young Nigerian children, aged 6-10 years, from Port Harcourt, Rivers State have won the Teamwork award at the FIRST® LEGO® League Junior (FLL® Jr.) International Challenge in California, United States of America.

The Challenge held on March 30, 2019 had the Nigerian team members: Okechukwu Samira Peculiar; Amos Uduak and Ayeba-Enenimiete Owatarite. They were coached by Uchechukwu Odiaka and Mercy Makagni.
