Nine Nigerians Win 2021 Facebook Community Accelerator Programme

Facebook has announced winners of the 2021 Facebook Community Accelerator Programme, highlighting the 13 Facebook community leaders from Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya who will receive training, mentorship and up to $50,000 in funds to invest in an initiative that extends their community’s positive impact.

The 13 winners emerged out of over 13,000 applicants who entered the 2021 Facebook Community Accelerator Programme, according to a statement distributed by APO Group on behalf of Facebook.

The Community Accelerator is part of Facebook’s Community Leadership Programme, a global initiative that invests in people building communities. Leaders will learn how to harness the power of their community to turn impactful ideas into action.

This year’s cohort features a diverse spectrum of communities engaged in interesting social impact activities ranging from combating child sexual abuse to helping moms and sharing stories of ordinary and extraordinary Nigerians from around the world.

Team Brainiacs Wins 2021 Mindgames Incorporated Scrabble Premier League (MGI)

Team Brainiacs has won the 2021 Mindgames Incorporated Scrabble Premier League (MGI).

Out of 12 teams that participated in the Division A category of the MGI Scrabble League held across various centres in Nigeria, Team Brainiacs won 41 games to accumulate the highest point in the championship.

The highly competitive MGI League, had over 200 scrabble players from across the country in the final of the league.

Winners have emerged in the 2021 African Legal Awards organised to recognise outstanding individuals and law firms, in the pan-African legal community.

The 2021 African Legal Awards held on September 3, 2021 witnessed a record-breaking submission from 16 countries.

In selecting the Partner of the year, the judges considered the leadership potential, legal skills, initiative, client relationship skills and contribution of the Partners to the wider community.

Team Premier Wins 2021 Data Science Nigeria AI For Energy Hackathon

Team Premier has emerged overall winner of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Energy Hackathon organised by Data Science Nigeria (DSN) and sponsored by NNPC/CNL JV (CNL).

The programme was created for participants to develop Artificial Intelligence solutions for Carbon Reduction in the energy sector.

Three teams emerged as winners of a total cash prize of 3 million.

The winner of the grand prize of 1.5 million, is Team Premier; the first runner-up (second position), is Team Chemotronix, winning 1 million and the second runner-up (third position) is Team Titans, winning 500,000.

D’Tigress Win 2021 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship

Emmanuel Okoro Wins Inaugural Africa Fashion Up Prize

Emmanuel Okoro has won the top prize at the inaugural edition of Africa Fashion Up, a showcase for African designers, with his Emmy Kasbit men’s and women’s collection made using traditional West African weaving techniques.

Nigerian designer Emmanuel Okoro was one of five designers shortlisted for the event in Paris, organized by the Share Africa platform in partnership with Balenciaga, which will mentor the finalists for six months.

Emmanuel Okoro was joined by Guy Fabrice Sullivan, the Ivorian designer behind the Zaady label; Zak Koné, also from Ivory Coast, founder of evening wear brand Pelebe; Baay Sooley and Laure Tarot, the designers behind Senegalese street wear brand Bull Doff, and Natasha Jaume and Carina Louw, founders of South African women’s wear brand Erre.
