Ms. Helen Oyeyemi, the author of the globally acclaimed novel, “The Icarus Girl”, has been declared winner of the PEN America OPEN BOOK Award 2017 for her 2016 book “What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours” with a cash prize of $5,000.

She won the prize for the category of the “Exceptional Book-Length Work of Literature By An Author of Color Published In 2016”.

The judges for the category were Ishmael Beah, Major Jackson and Bich Minh Nguyen.

2016 Best Brand Equity Awards

Two brands from the stable of Chi Limited, Nectar & Value Added Dairy products, have been honoured for their Outstanding Brand Equity and market leadership.

The award was presented at the maiden edition of the Best Brand Equity Awards 2016, held in Nigeria, recently, by Kantar Millward Brown, one of the world’s leading global research agency, specialising in advertising effectiveness, strategic communication, media and brand equity research.

Chivita won the Best Brand Equity Award in the Juices and Soft drinks Category, while Hollandia emerged winner of the Best Brand Equity Award in the Dairy category.

2017 AAS & ACU CIRCLE Fellows

12 Nigerian lecturers and scientists have been awarded as CIRCLE fellows by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), to study the impact of climate change.

They were selected from tertiary institutions in Nigeria including the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB); Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU); Ebonyi State University (EBSU); University of Ibadan; University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT); Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) and Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU.

The Nigerians and 25 others drawn from tertiary institutions in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda and Zimbabwe, were participants in the 3rd cohort of a programme supporting early career researchers to conduct research and to generate knowledge to help the continent effectively tackle climate change. They make up the 37 African lecturers and researchers scientists selected as Visiting Fellows of the Climate Impact Research Capacity and Leadership Enhancement (CIRCLE) visiting fellowship programme.

2016 Dstv Eutelsat Star Award (Poster Category) – Emmanuel Ochenjele

Emmanuel Ochenjele was awarded for his depiction of a constellation of diverse satellites all contributing towards the advancement of solutions to challenges such as global warming, conservation of biodiversity and stable energy supply.

He will visit Eutelsat in Paris to understand how satellites are operated, as well as a satellite factory. Aobakwe Letamo from Botswana was the runner up in the same category. The four winning schools attended by the overall award winners and runners-up were also rewarded with a DStv installation, including dish, TV set, PVR decoder and free access to the DStv Education Bouquet.

Claudie Haigneré, Europe’s leading female astronaut and now special advisor to the Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA), chaired the jury of the Awards for the first time.

Alex Ndubuisi Nwegbu Emerge President Of The Organization Of African Geological Surveys

Alex Ndubuisi Nwegbu, Director General of the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), has been elected and sworn in as President of the Organization of African Geological Surveys (OAGS) for the next three years.

OAGS started in South Africa ten years ago as an initiative of the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) through the African Mining Partnership (AMP).

Its mandate involves delivering on some strategic objectives, including capacity building for industry players, sharing knowledge, achieving financial stability, and constructive engagement with development partners towards effective utilization of African resources in order to develop the continent’s economy.
