Uverineh Oghenefejiro has emerged overall winner in the maiden edition of the Rejoice Alabi Writing (RAW) Challenge for first year Law students.
The competition, with the theme: Why I want to be a lawyer, is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of the founding partner of Egbaaibon & Alabi LP, Mr. Rejoice Alabi.
Uverineh Oghenefejiro of the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, overcame over 40 students from 10 universities to come tops.
Ogunba Ademiposi and Ibikunle Daniel, both of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Osun State, were second and third respectively.
The trio were rewarded with ₦30,000, ₦20,000 and ₦10,000 cash prizes.
Seven other winners included: Okorafor Chidera Naomi of the University of Nigeria (UNN), Iyogun Emmanuella of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Aluko Deborah and Esther M. Osore both of the University of Ibadan (UI).
All participants received certificates of participation while the top seven winners have been attached to practising First Class lawyers for mentoring.
Mr. Rejoice Alabi, who made a First Class at the Nigerian Law School in 2016, told The Nation that entries for the event, received between January 15 and February 14, “were carefully scrutinised and graded by a team of young First Class lawyers.”
“The RAW Challenge was organised to identify and selectively mentor raw legal minds to raise a generation of purpose-driven young lawyers who will revolutionise the future of legal practice and nation building; and unleash maximum impact.
The challenge was introduced during the recently called off Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike and it afforded the participants a platform to objectively evaluate and reassess their career choice even in the midst of the academic crisis.
More interesting is the endorsement and support the initiative received from individuals as well as local and international not-for-profit organisations such as the MCQ App, Ekaete Hunter Blog, iRead To Live Initiative, Feathers Creative, De Champ Tech House and Mrs Akinsunmade of the Nigerian Ports Authority who donated a 100 per cent addition to the originally announced prizes.”
