Obari Gomba Wins 2022 PAWA Poetry Prize

Obari Gomba has won the 2022 Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) poetry prize. He won the prize, worth $2,000, with his collection of poems, The Lilt Of The Rebel.

Obari Gomba, a Professor of English at the University of Port Harcourt and currently fellow at the University of Oxford, was announced as the winner after beating other five shortlisted Nigerians in a virtual ceremony on 3 March 2022.

The shortlisted poets included Echezonachukwu Nduka (Chrysanthemum For Wide Eyed Ghosts), Tanure Ojaide (A Poetic Diary Of The Coronavirus Epidemic) Servio Gbadamosi (Where The Light Enters You), and Olumide Olaniyan (Akimbo In Limbo).

RiceAfrika Emerges Winner In WEF Circulars Accelerator Cohort 2022

RiceAfrika, an agro-tech start-up, has emerged winner alongside 16 other start-ups of the Circulars Accelerator Cohort 2022 award by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

RiceAfrika uses technology to boost local rice and wheat production by improving the capacity of local rice and wheat farmers in Nigeria through the deployment of its IoT-enabled, eco-friendly harvester machines, precision farming solutions and guaranteed off-take of produce at the farm gate.

The Circulars Accelerator is an action-oriented, six-month accelerator programme for circular economy innovators.

Professor Oghenetega Ighedo has become the first black woman graduate with a PhD in Pure Mathematics at the University of South Africa (UNISA).

It is the first time such achievement would be attained in South Africa’s foremost university since it was established 148 years ago.

University Of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Wins 9th All-Nigeria Universities Debating Championship (ANUDC)

University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has emerged the overall winner of the 9th All-Nigeria Universities Debating Championship (ANUDC) hosted by the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) between February 13 – 19, 2022.

1st Runner up – University of Ilorin 2nd

Runner up – Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (MOUDC)

The championship, which is an annual event, drew participants from 23 universities across Nigeria for debate/public speaking contests in the British Parliamentary style.

Lumen Christi International High School Wins Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award [2022]

Lumen Christi International High School, Uromi, Edo State has been honoured with the Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award for producing the best aggregate results in WASSCE for School Candidates in 2021 in Nigeria.

This is the sixth time the all-boys Catholic boarding school will win the award, having clinched it in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2016.
