Dr. Andrew Oke-‘Ovie Akala Wins AGU 2019 Africa Award For Research Excellence In Space Science

Dr. Andrew Oke-‘Ovie Akala of the Department of Physics and Deputy Director, APD, Distance Learning Institute (DLI) of the University of Lagos has been announced as the recipient of the 2019 Africa Award for Research Excellence in Space Science.

The Award was conferred on him by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) as recognition for his completing significant research in space science as an early career scientist from the African Continent.

Zahrah Ibrahim Wins Inaugural European Drilling Engineering Association Drilling Engineering Innovation Award

Zahrah Ibrahim, a PhD student of the University of Aberdeen School of Engineering has won the inaugural European Drilling Engineering Association Drilling Engineering (DEA(e)) Innovation award.

The award, comes with 5,000 Euros cash prize and attendance at 2 DEA(e) meetings with paid travel and accommodation expenses.

All applications were reviewed based on their innovation, relevance to the DEA(e) and impact to the industry and the steering committee agreed that Zahrah’s presentation scored high in all three categories.

Nigeria Receive ICAO Award For Improving Security In Aviation Sector

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has presented the “ICAO Council President’s Certificate” to Nigeria in recognition of its progress in solving aviation security and oversight deficiencies.

The President of ICAO Council, Dr. Olumuyiwa Aliu, said the certificate was in recognition of the contributions of deserving member-states to the marked improvement in global aviation safety and security.

Nigeria received the certificated based on its commitment to the effective implementation of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices.

Olufunmilayo Gabriel And Yemisi Olatunji Win Inaugural Apapa Club Open Squash Championship

Olufunmilayo Gabriel and Yemisi Olatunji have won the maiden edition of the Apapa Club Open Squash Championship, which featured some of the best players from across Nigeria.

The Apapa Club Open Squash Championship, which is a Professional Squash Association (PSA) ranking event, impressed as Gabriel defeated Nigeria’s number one male player, Sodiq Taiwo 3-1, while Yemisi Olatunji defeated her younger sister, Busayo, to win the female category.

Central Bank Of Nigeria Wins 33rd Financial Institutions Football Competition

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has won the 33rd edition of the financial institutions football competition by defeating the Unity Bank team 1-0 in the final.

The match played on the 21st of September 2019 inside the Pa Ngele Oruta stadium was watched by over 2,000 fans.

Data Science Nigeria (DSN) Wins Wangari Maathai 2019 Impact Award & Deep Learning Indaba Continental Award

Data Science Nigeria (DSN) has received the Wangari Maathai 2019 Impact Award in Kenya and emerged the second best at the first Deep Learning Indaba Continental event in Tunisia.

The Founder of the Data Science Nigeria (DSN) Mr. Bayo Adekanmbi in Kenya, received the Wangari Maathai 2019 Impact Award for training Nigerian data scientists and strengthening the African machine learning and Artificial Intelligence ecosystem more broadly.

At the first Deep Learning Indaba Continental event in Tunisia, DSN presented 5 posters and the ‘NaLie’ crowdsourced app.

Nkoli Omhoudu And Isaac Anyaogu Win 2019 Nigerian Academy Of Science (NAS) Media Award

Mrs. Nkoli Omhoudu of African Independent Television (AIT) and Mr. Isaac Anyaogu of BusinessDay Newspaper have won the 2019 Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) Media award organised by NAS in partnership with Vitafoam Nigeria Plc.

Mrs. Nkoli Omhoudu won the Science Journalist of the year award for broadcast category with her story titled “Rhesus Disease: Babies Silent Killer” while Mr. Isaac Anyaogu emerged winner of the print category with his story titled “Dying in Instalment: How Lead Battery Recyclers are Poisoning Nigerians.”

Each of the winners got a voucher worth of 50,000 to shop from Vitafoam Comfort Center and a 200,000 cheque from Vitafoam Nigeria Plc.
