NDPR Wins Global Award Over Reduction Of Gas Flare [2015]

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has commended Niger Delta Petroleum Resources Limited (NDPR), an indigenous petroleum company for the significant reduction of gas flaring in its facility.

The company won the 2015 Global Gas Flare Reduction Excellence Award by the Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership.

The Brookings’ 2015 Financial and Digital Inclusion Project (FDIP) Report

The Brookings’ 2015 Financial and Digital Inclusion Project (FDIP) report, which evaluates access to and usage of affordable financial services across 21 countries, has rated efforts by Nigeria to drive financial inclusion high. According to the report by the Center for Technology Innovation, with a total of 72 percent points.

Nigeria achieved a number nine ranking for the country’s overall financial inclusion efforts. The report analysed the financial inclusion landscape in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Turkey, Uganda, and Zambia. Countries received scores and rankings based on 33 indicators spanning four dimensions: country commitment, mobile capacity, regulatory environment, and adoption.

Nikki Laoye Awarded World Hope Foundation Humanitarian Personality Of The Year [2015]

Nikki Laoye has been awarded the Humanitarian Personality of the Year by World Hope Foundation at Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos on August 19, 2015 (World Humanitarian Day).

The plaque is a gold plated ‘Hands of Love’ award and was presented to the actress by Mr. Fola Kudehinbu, MD Fountain Initiative for Social Development (FISD) and supported by the main speaker of the event, Mr. Oyebisi Oluseyi, Executive Director, Nigeria Network of NGOs and Mr. Oludotun Olugbemi (CEO/Founder, World Hope Foundation).

4 Nigerians Emerge Best Graduating Students At Dillard University [2015]

Four Nigerians, three men and a lady have been named best graduating students at the Dillard University, New Orleans, U.S.A.

20-year-old Merrilyn Akpapuna, from Delta State, at the ceremony held for 226 graduates, at the Dillard University Auditorium.

The Merrilyn Akpapuna bright mind has obtained the highest distinction, Summa Cum Laude, in Psychology. The topic of her research project was sexual harassment. Moreover, Akpapuna won an award for highest academic achievements for the College of Arts and Sciences and another one for College of General Studies. She plans her postgraduate study at Western Michigan University.
Akpapuna who delivered the farewell speech at the ceremony, shared the stage with Michelle Obama.

The other Nigerians are:

– Victor Ogburie (Abia State) – Computer Science Major with minors in Physics and Mathematics. Academic award: Salutatorian – Summa Cum Laude;

– Stephen Ogidi Igwe (Abia State) – Biology Major. Academic Award: Salutatorian – Summa Cum Laude.

– Emole Anya Dimgba (Abia State) – Computer Science Major with minors in Physics and Mathematics. Academic Award: Salutatorian – Summa Cum Laude.

However, while speaking at the ceremony, US first lady, Michelle Obama, described the graduates of the “historically-black” college as a “sea of young geniuses”, told them they had opportunities and skills that their parents and grandparents never could have imagined.

UNILAG Undergraduates Build Dove P1

A team of students in the University of Lagos have built an eco-friendly car named Dove P1. They state that the car does not emit gas and does not utilize fossil fuel.

They built the car under the Project Dove Initiative and have successfully completed their first model, Dove P1, utilizing locally sourced materials and building it at the university of Lagos.

The Dove initiative is a program in Nigerian Universities where students with automotive passion can harness their talents and produce eco-friendly vehicles.

Truppr Launches in Nairobi, Kenya

Nigerian startup Truppr, which provides a platform allowing fitness enthusiasts to connect with events and people around them, has been launched in Nairobi, Kenya; its first expansion outside of Nigeria.

Launched in August 2014 by Co-Creation Hub (CcHub) co-founder Bosum Tijani, Truppr provides a one-stop-shop for finding and booking sports venues, organising events, and finding teammates and fitness partners.
