The Purpose Of Nigeria! By Adu Michael Adeyemi

Far from that time in 1947 when Chief Obafemi Awolowo said in his Path to Nigerian Freedom that “Nigeria is not a nation, it is a mere geographical expression”, the same phrase can no longer be said to hold water. About 104 years ago when the Northern and Southern protectorates were merged to create the entity called Nigeria, it was – in truth – purely for economic and administration reasons. Sixty (60) years after independence through a lot of turbulence, the country still remains as one ‘indivisible and indissoluble sovereign nation under God.[i]

It is now even truer for Nigeria as a country that:

Geography has made us neighbours; history has made us friends; economics has made us partners; and necessity has made us one… What unites us is far greater than what divides us.[ii]

The Purpose Of Nigeria! By Olawale Lekan Christopher

“Our country is the largest single unit in Africa… we are not going to abdicate the position in which God Almighty has placed us. The whole black continent is looking up to this country to liberate it from thraldom.” (Jaja Wachuku, Nigeria’s first Minister of External Affairs.)

When the fetters of colonisation began to break in the late 1950s and 1960s in Africa, there was a need for a big brother nation to emerge among the newly independent African countries that would lead the way in the political stability and economic prosperity of the newly liberated continent. Due to its size in population and resources, Nigeria seemed to have been a perfect fit for the role. And as soon as it gained independence in 1960,  Nigeria began to lead, offering political, military and financial supports to African countries in need.

Asubiojo Henry Olaoluwa, has emerged the best public secondary school teacher in Nigeria in the 2020 President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award.

Asubiojo Henry Olaoluwa is a teacher from Amoye Grammar School, Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Aliyu Alhasan from IPDI, Minna, and St. Joseph CRS school, Iboko Offot, Uyo, emerged first and second runners-up, respectively, in the 2020 public school teachers award.

Similarly, Istifanus Caroline, a teacher from ECWA. L. Crawford, Kaltungo, Gombe state, emerged the best private junior school teacher.

The President/CEO of Global Education Network (Nigeria), had earlier on received a triple appointment as a member of Harvard Business Review Council, USA; Commonwealth Education Council, London UK and Leadership Council, USA.

Professor Adetunji Haastrup, a Fellow of the International Academy of Management London UK and Fellow of the Certified Public Administrators of England and Wales, made history as one of the first batch of accredited management trainers in Nigeria.

Mrs. Dorothy Udeme Ufot has won the African Arbitrator (AFAA) of the Year Award at a virtual event hosted on the sidelines of the yearly East African International Arbitration Conference, which took place in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mrs. Dorothy Udeme Ufot, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and chartered arbitrator, defeated her counterparts Professor Mohammed Abdel Wahab from Egypt and Dr. Jamsheed Peeroo from Mauritius.

The Africa Arbitration Awards winners were announced and celebrated in a virtual ceremony that was broadcast live on Zoom, YouTube and on the conference portal.

Funmi Adewara has emerged winner of the World Bank SDGs & Her Global Competition Award 2020 for Women Entrepreneurs.

Seven winners were selected from a pool of 2,400 applicants from around the world who took part in the competition.

Other winners include Annisa Hasanah Ashyad of Ecofun Indonesia; Bassma Ali of G-Gateway; Kayumba Chiwele of PyscHealth Zambia; Melina Taprant of Wise Greece; Marysela Zamora of Nosotras; and Maliha Khalid of Doctory.
