Akwa United FC have won the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) title for the 2020/2021 season and for the very first time in their history.
The Promise Keepers, as they are fondly called, sealed their first league title on the 1st of August 2021 following a comprehensive 5-2 win over MFM in Uyo at the Nest of Champions.

Brume Ese has won Nigeria’s first official medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan by winning the Bronze medal in the Women’s Long Jump event.
Brume Ese on 3rd of August 2021, with her best leap of 6.97 meters settled for the bronze behind World champion Malaika Mihambo who won Gold with her very last jump of 7.00 meters.
United States’ Brittney Rees who also had a best jump of 6.97 meters picked the silver medal ahead of Brume with the countback rule.
This is Nigeria’s first medal in athletics at the Olympic Games in 13 years.
With Brume’s Bronze, Nigeria has completed the cycle of winning all three categories of medals in the Women’s Long Jump event.

17-year-old Abiola Ogunbanwo has set a new national record by becoming the first Nigerian woman to finish the 100 meters swimming freestyle under a minute.
She achieved the feat on the 28th of July 2021 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre during the Tokyo Olympics in Japan having won Heat 1 of the swimming event in 59.74 seconds.
With the feat, she has broken a longstanding Nigerian record of 1:00.50 set by Ngozi Monu, which had served as the benchmark since 2007.
Mary Adeyemo has emerged overall winner of the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NICArb) Young Arbitrators Virtual Debate 2021.

Yusuf Bilesanmi has been voted as the inaugural winner of the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation “One To Watch” award.
Yusuf was one of the twelve (12) innovators who pitched their innovations to a live audience who voted his – ShiVent – as one that showed promise and potential for impact. He also received a £5,000 prize.
ShiVent is a low-cost, non-electric and non-invasive ventilator for patients with respiratory difficulties, available at a fraction of the cost of mechanical ventilators. Its simple design enables it to be operated by unspecialised healthcare workers.
ShiVent is designed for under-resourced clinics with unreliable electricity supply and limited access to specialist knowledge.
Team Nigeria captain, Aruna Quadri, has emerged the highest-rated African table tennis player.
The Nigerian has been seeded number 15 among the players in the men’s singles competition of the table tennis event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
