Ayodele Oluwafemi, Taiwo Adebulu, Vivian Chime And Three Others Emerge Report For The World Inaugural Reporting Corps [2021-2022]

Ayodele Oluwafemi, Taiwo Adebulu, Vivian Chime and three other journalists have emerged Report for the World inaugural reporting corps [2021-2022].

Three corps members will join the staff at TheCable in Nigeria and three will join Scroll.in in India.

Report for the World launched in February and has been working with its newsroom partners, TheCable and Scroll.in, to select these talented local journalists. The application process was highly competitive, with over 335 applicants, but only six spots available. The corps members, who are full-time employees of the newsrooms for up to three years, are:

  • Aarefa Johari, covering work and gender for Scroll.in
  • Ayodele Oluwafemi, covering criminal justice for TheCable
  • Ishan Kukreti, covering land and climate for Scroll.in
  • Johanna Deeksha, covering health and education for Scroll.in
  • Taiwo Adebulu, fact-checking for TheCable
  • Vivian Chime, covering climate change for TheCable

Indigenous Labs Wins 2021 Abuja Tech Friday Hackathon

Indigenous Labs have emerged first place winner of the 2021 Abuja Tech Friday Hackathon organised by Art Tech District (ATD) in collaboration with the Civic Innovation Lab (Civicilab).

This hackathon is an opportunity for Developers, Tech Startups, Tech enthusiasts and Undergraduates (in Universities across Nigeria) to propose and build software solutions to determine the best way to walk through museum exhibitions using AR (Augmented Reality) or VR (Virtual Reality) or a Web Application, with the aim of synchronizing Nigerian Art and History with digital solutions.

The maiden edition of the Abuja Tech Friday is a series of hackathons to create a platform for “Using Technology To Tell Nigerian History” and will be called the MUSEUMHACK.

Indigenous Labs – proud lovers of culture whose solution enabled uploads, updates, and registration processes; a full system in one. Their solution leverages on providing traction and no-contact experiences which enables navigation in, around and out of the museum-freely, truly built for times like this. They also demonstrated how museums can become the go-to for teaching kids history and empowering institutions. The fact that these things can be achieved using web links and not an application was another factor that distinguished this team of two.

Indigenous Labs receive the grand prize of ₦500,000 seed fund for further development of the solution.

Zainab Bala And Bernadette Vivuya Win 2021 Michael Elliott Award For Excellence In African Storytelling

Zainab Bala of Nigeria and Bernadette Vivuya of Congo have emerged winners of the 2021 Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling.

Zainab Bala, a broadcast reporter who exposed pernicious child neglect in Nigeria, and Bernadette Vivuya, a multimedia journalist who uncovered child labor in mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo, emerged winners of the award after a distinguished panel of judges selected the winners from among 130 applicants.

Ecobank Nigeria, FCMB And Union Bank Win Starsight Sustainability Award 2020

Ecobank Nigeria, First City Monument Bank Limited (FCMB) and Union Bank have won the Starsight Sustainability Award 2020, which recognises business enterprises for their efforts in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The award was presented on April 6th, 2021 in Lagos, by renewable energy provider Starsight Energy, which targets corporate clients that have installed solar systems in at least 100 of their branches.

A selection criterion far exceeded by Ecobank Nigeria, where Starsight Energy has deployed solar systems in 150 branches across the West African country, with an installed solar and hybrid capacity of 11 megawatts (MW).

Zenith Bank Plc has emerged as the Best Bank in Nigeria in the Global Finance Magazine’s Best Banks Awards 2021, retaining the award for a second consecutive year.

The bank was among other banks from 35 countries in Africa recognised as the prestigious US magazine, Global Finance announced its 28th Annual Best Bank Awards Winners in Africa.

Shining Star Group Of Schools Wins 2021 EducationUSA Annual Martin Luther King Performing Arts Contest

Shining Star Group Of Schools, Abuja has emerged the first place winner of the 2021 EducationUSA Annual Martin Luther King Performing Arts Contest.

The school beat over 50 others in a competition organized annually by the EducationUSA to mark the Black History Month.

This year, contesting schools were tasked to use drama or poetry to represent the major content of Martin Luther King’s speech.
